Everything Else Pails in Comparison to This...

Looking to spice up your fall decor this year? Follow these easy steps to transform a lackluster pail into a trendy, fun, and functional statement piece for your front porch!

What you'll need:

  • 8-9408: Diamondhard RePurpose Golden Dandelion
  • 8-9407: Diamondhard RePurpose Ivory Flake
  • small metal pail (available at Hobby Lobby for around $5)
  • 2' tassel trim ribbon
  • painter's tape
  • small and medium paint brush

How It's Done:

Step 1: Begin by removing the handle and cleaning outside of bucket to ensure a clean surface with no dust or dirt. I usually use a damp paper towel. Let dry completely.

Step 2: Place tape roughly 2-2.5" below top of pail. It helps to get a pail like the one pictured above as it has a ridge which makes it very easy to ensure the tape is straight all the way around.

Step 3: Apply Golden Dandelion horizontally in one smooth stroke. This can be done easily by placing the pail on top of closed Ivory Flake can and slowly (but steadily) spinning the pail while maintaining a steady, still hand with paint brush. This way, the paint covers the pail in an even, straight coat all the way around. If that makes things more difficult for you, don't worry! Painting with a steady hand will also work perfectly fine. Apply another coat 1-2 hours after.

Step 4: Carefully remove tape while paint is still wet. You may either try to remove smudges now or leave them as is because we will be covering them with Ivory Flake.

Step 5: Allow paint to cure for 24 hours.

Step 6: Apply new piece of tape overlapping previously painted surface still ensuring that it is applied as straight as possible. Make sure edge is pressed down firmly to avoid paint from seeping onto previously painted surface.

Step 7: Apply another piece of tape roughly 1-1.5" from bottom of pail. This will allow for a small strip of metal to be exposed at the bottom, adding a fun industrial look to the finished product.

Step 8: Using a large, wide brush apply Ivory Flake using the same technique used when applying Golden Dandelion. Allow paint to dry for 1-2 hours and apply 1-2 more coats depending on desired vibrancy of color.

Step 9: Remove tape very carefully to avoid peeling Golden Dandelion. Apply touch ups where needed.

Step 10: Carefully hot glue tassel trim over seam of Golden Dandelion and Ivory Flake. Place hot glue drops every 1-2" to ensure tassels stay put. Be careful to use very small drops so that glue does not seep over edges of trim. (If this does occur, use an X-acto to carefully cut off excess glue.) Cut ribbon at seam and glue two seams together.

Step 11: Allow paint to cure for 4-5 days.

Step 12: Go to the store, pick out some beautiful mums, put them in your stylish new planter and viola! You've just made a trendy, functional, and awesome decoration.

Step 13: Pat yourself on the back and start planning your next project!!

We told you it'd be that easy.
